Professor Aggrey Ayuen Majok's educational background by Adier Kur Adier.
Aggrey Ayuen was born in 1947 to the family of Majok Anyieth- Akoubeny and Anyieth Lual Diing in Bor, Upper Nile. He was raised up in Bor, attended both basic and elementary schools there. He received his bachelor of veterinary science (BVSc) in 1971 from the University of Khartoum; his diploma in tropical veterinary medicine (DTVM) from the Rosin Institute, University of Edinburgh, in 1976; and his master’s of veterinary medicine (MVM) from the University of Glasgow in 1978. Aggrey Ayuen earned another master’s degree in preventive veterinary medicine (MPVM) with an epidemiology option at the University of California, Davis (1989). He received his Doctorate in veterinary epidemiology (quantitative/analytical) in 1991.
He was also a Parvin Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson school of public and International Affairs, Developmental studies, Rural strategies, Princeton University (1986).
Dr. Aggrey Ayuen’s public service career commenced in September 1971 when he was employed as a veterinary officer (VO) in Upper Nile’s Sobat District; he became a district veterinary officer (DVO) in 1974. When he returned from his postgraduate studies in the UK, he was promoted to assistant director for veterinary services for the Southern Region, Juba in November 1979. In June 1979, he was promoted to deputy director of veterinary services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Animal Resources. The following year, Dr Aggrey Ayuen was promoted to the senior position of director for veterinary services for Southern Sudan.
Dr. Aggrey moved to academia in August 1983 as a lecturer at the college of Natural Resources and Environmental studies, University of Juba. He was a senior lecture in animal health and was head of the animal science Unit in September 1985, when he left the University. He took a similar position, senior lecturer in veterinary epidemiology, at the University of Zimbabwe, Harare (August 1991- January 1996).
He also served in Botswana as principal veterinary officer (epidemiology) and the head of the epidemiology and economics Unit for the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Botswana, Gaborone (January 1996-August 1997). He worked as an epidemiologist for UN agencies such as FAO (August 1997- March 2003) and was project coordinator of epidemiology (an ILRI/ICARDA Joint appointment) for IFAD (January 2004- December 2004). Professor Aggrey Ayuen also held several consultancies for international European NGOs.
Following the CPA, he was reinstated at the University of Juba as a professor of veterinary epidemiology in January 2007. A year later, he was seconded as a founding principal of Dr. John Garang Institute of science and Technology In July 2008, and he was Vice chancellor of the University ( February 2011- March 2014). Professor Aggrey Ayuen Majok was transferred to a similar position to the University of Rumbek in March 2014- 10 January 2019.
He had published widely in his field and is a co-author, with C.W Schwabe, of Development Among Africa’s Migratory Pastoralists ( Westport, CT: Bergin & Garvey, 1996). He had published many articles in international, academically refereed journal; he also presented papers at the international conferences.
Professor Aggrey Ayuen Majok aka Ayuen Anyieth Lual is going to be missed by the family, community and in the ministry of higher education where he served in.
