3 Marine Divisions — Nearly the Entire Corps — Fought for a Month The battle for the tiny 8-square-mile island consumed virtually the entire U.S. Marine Corps for over a month. Three full divisions were committed to root out the 22,000 defenders from their interconnected underground fortresses.

Iwo Jima was the only Marine battle where American casualties (over 26,000) exceeded those of the Japanese.
