Attukal Pongala 2026 is expected to be celebrated in February–March 2026 at the famous Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Attukal Pongala is one of the largest gatherings of women devotees in the world and has been recorded in the Guinness World Records for massive female participation. The main ritual involves women preparing pongala, a sweet offering made of rice, jaggery, and coconut, in earthen pots on temporary brick stoves set up along roads and open spaces across the city. The ritual begins with the ceremonial lighting of the hearth (Pandara Aduppu) from the temple, after which the fire is passed from one hearth to another. When the pongala boils over, it symbolizes prosperity and divine blessings. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, believed to be an incarnation of Kannaki, and the celebrations include special poojas, cultural programs, and religious rituals that continue for several days. Lakhs of women from different parts of Kerala and other states participate every year, and the city observes traffic restrictions and special arrangements to manage the huge crowd during the festival day.
