Bells of Brittany: Chapelle Notre Dame du Quelven

Описание: EN: The Chapelle Notre Dame du Quelven is a majestic chapel (yes, chapel, not a parish church or basilica or anything!) situated in the small hamlet of Le Quelven (Breton: quelvenn, meaning 'edge of the heath') on a raised position overlooking the village of Guern, Morbihan, Brittany.

The first chapel was recorded in the 14th century as a chapel of ease tied to the parish of Guern. Notre-Dame du Quelven appears in 1401, when the first known chapel is mentioned in a papal bull of indulgence granting spiritual privileges to pilgrims visiting the shrine. Pope Nicholas V granted indulgences to those who visited and contributed to the chapel’s rebuilding, indicating it was already a place of notable Marian devotion by the mid-15th century. This charter was pivotal in funding the construction of the present building.

The current chapel was built between 1451 and 1520 in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The architectural attributes of the building are very similar to those of the Basilique Notre Dame in Hennebont, the Chapelle St Nicodème in Pluméliau, the Chapelle Notre Dame de Locmaria in Melrand etc, so it leads me to believe that these structures were built by the same masons. The interior of the chapel boasts finely carved 17th and 18th century choir stalls and confessionals, with gilded retables and statues adorning the choir. It's an impressive sight. There is also a "galerie des seigneurs" in the south transept.

The 76 meter (250ft) west tower is a 19th century reconstruction, using as much of the original material as possible. On the 22nd of February 1837, lightning struck the original spire and brought it crashing down, damaging the west front and destroying the two large bells installed in 1835. Between 1841 and 1862, the tower was meticulously restored, with its upper section rebuilt to a design by M. Richard of Pontivy. The new tower was originally supposed to be 85 meters tall (nearly 300ft!) but a design change thanks to budget meant that the height was reduced to what it is now.

The tower contains four bells, all cast in 1896 by Adolphe Havard of Villedieu-les-Poeles in Normandie. They are still rung by rope, which, considering their weight, is quite a rarity! The total weight of the bells is 4,200kg (82cwt).

FR: La chapelle Notre-Dame du Quelven est un édifice majestueux située dans le petit hameau du Quelven, sur une colline dominant le bourg de Guern, dans le Morbihan, en Bretagne.

La première chapelle est attestée au XIVᵉ siècle ; il s’agissait alors d’une chapelle-trève dépendant de la paroisse de Guern. Notre-Dame du Quelven apparaît en 1401: la première chapelle connue est mentionnée dans une bulle d’indulgence pontificale accordant des privilèges spirituels aux pèlerins venant prier au sanctuaire. Le pape Nicolas V accorda des indulgences à ceux qui visitaient et contribuaient à la reconstruction de la chapelle, preuve qu’elle était déjà, au milieu du XVᵉ siècle, un lieu de dévotion mariale réputé. Cette charte fut déterminante pour financer la construction de l’édifice actuel.

La chapelle actuelle fut construite entre 1451 et 1520 dans le style gothique flamboyant. Ses caractéristiques architecturales sont très proches de celles de la basilique Notre-Dame d’Hennebont, de la chapelle Saint-Nicodème à Pluméliau et de la chapelle Notre-Dame de Locmaria à Melrand, ce qui laisse penser que ces édifices furent réalisés par les mêmes maîtres-maçons. À l’intérieur, on peut admirer de superbes stalles et confessionnaux sculptés des XVIIᵉ et XVIIIᵉ siècles, ainsi que des retables dorés et des statues qui ornent le chœur. On y trouve également une galerie des seigneurs dans le transept sud.

La tour occidentale, haute de 76 mètres, est une reconstruction du XIXᵉ siècle, réalisée en réutilisant autant que possible les matériaux d’origine. Le 22 février 1837, la foudre frappa la flèche primitive et la fit s’effondrer, endommageant la façade ouest et détruisant les deux grosses cloches installées en 1835. Entre 1841 et 1862, la tour fut restaurée, sa partie supérieure étant rebâtie d’après les plans de M. Richard, architecte à Pontivy. Le projet initial prévoyait une hauteur de 85 mètres, mais une révision budgétaire entraîna la réduction de la flèche à sa hauteur actuelle.

La tour abrite quatre cloches, toutes fondues en 1896 par Adolphe Havard, fondeur à Villedieu-les-Poêles en Normandie. Elles sont encore actionnées à la corde, ce qui, compte tenu de leur poids, est devenu assez rare ! Le poids total de l’ensemble atteint 4,200 kg.
