The Kemp's ridley sea turtle nesting range is from Tamaulipas, Mexico to Bolivar, Texas. Females will nest one to three times during the nesting season from April to July with an average clutch size of 100 eggs.
This female Kemp's ridley sea turtle is nesting on the beach in Freeport, Texas. These sea turtles typically nest during the daytime on windy days as demonstrated in the video. She is doing the "ridley rumba" by moving her body over the nesting area to cover the nest cavity. As she is leaving the nest area, the turtle will flip sand with all four flippers to further cover the nest before returning to the Gulf of Mexico.
There were 99 eggs in this clutch and after an incubation period of about 60 days the hatchlings will be released into the Gulf of Mexico.
