Group planning exercise [GPE] or Military Planning Exercise [MPE] is done to check the reaction of candidates when put under a series of stressful situation, in which decision making ability and quick reactions of a candidate is checked. The Group Planning Exercise (GPE) is a part of the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview process for the Indian Armed Forces. The SSB interview process is a 4-5 day process that consists of 2 stages. Stage 1 has an OIR and PPDT challenge. Stage 2 has psychological tests, GTO Tasks, and interviews. The GPE is conducted on the first day of the indoor GTO tasks. In the GPE, candidates are divided into groups and given situational problems. The problems are presented on a model or map.
