Original Po’ Boy Sandwich and more (1929) on Sandwiches of History

Описание: Ok so, first things first, Parkway Tavern did not invent the Po’ Boy. That was the Martin Brothers. However Parkway Tavern did start serving them the same year that the Martin Brothers did (as did other New Orleans sandwich shops). And, since Parkway Tavern is still in business, that’s where I went to try the original Po’ Boy. The sandwiches were given out for free to striking transit workers. It’s said that the name derives from the sandwich makers saying “here comes another one of them poor boys” when a striking worker would come in. Btw, I don’t think that was a dig.

The original and the one served by Parkway (which they call The Streetcar) consist of french fries, gravy, and leftover bits of roast beef that were in the gravy better known today as debris. They are tasty, hearty, and filling if not the most nutritious sandwich in the world. Today, I had one dressed (with shredded lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayonnaise). I also tried out their James Brown Po’ Boy. And fried pickles because, c’mon, right?
