Dissections at the time were completely illegal unless performed by a physician, which da Vinci was not.
He was eventually granted special permission by the Catholic Church, allowing him to continue his studies with the goal of publishing a medical book that would provide a comprehensive study of the structure and function of the human body.
This was when he switched from obtaining cadavers from grave robbers to sourcing them through hospital directors.
The book was never published, due in part to da Vinci’s perfectionism, the death of his collaborator Marcantonio della Torre, and political turmoil.
