Class 144 Pacer diesel multiple unit at Oxenhope on the Keighley & Worth Valley Heritage Railway

Описание: You join us again on the 11th May 2025 at Oxenhope on the Keighley & Worth Valley heritage railway.
A common feature of their timetable is to alternate diesel and steam train in their services.The unit we are looking at here is a Class 144 diesel multiple unit -otherwise known as a ""Pacer"".
Built in 1986 to operate local train services in West Yorkshire, this was a joint venture between British Rail and Walter Alexander & Co. The underframes were built in Derby by British Rail with the bodies built by Walter Alexander in Falkirk. The final assembly and kitting out were done by British Rail in Derby.
Initially, these units has the much derided ""bus-style"" bench seats, but these were replaced with more comfortable versions later on.
Based at the Neville Hill depot in Leeds, these units ran on the Aire Valley line from Leeds and Bradford to Skipton via Keighley. Some units did go further afield to Lancaster and Morecambe.Class 144 Pacer units were withdrawn from the Aire Valley line when it was electrified, but continued to provide decent services to Lancaster up until 2019.
These Pacer units provided a relatively low-cost, and low-maintenance vehicle.There is no doubt that they contributed to the continued availability of passenger services on marginal rail lines.
Services on these rail lines might otherwise have been withdrawn, had it not been for cost-effective operations.
These Pacer units provided 34 years of service across West Yorkshire by British Rail. Whilst not the most romantic or glamorous of units, it is good to know that a working example of a Pacer unit has been preserved.
It is greet to see that the Keighley & Worth Valley preserves a range of rolling stock with such local history.It is also good to know that generally Pacer units are alternated in the timetable by the Keighley & Worth Valley railway.
