Fontaines D.C. went from Dublin post-punk band to Grammy-nominated mainstream act in five years. But they didn't change their sound—they just kept refining it while the audience caught up.
This video traces their progression from Dogrel (2019) to Romance (2024), examining how an Irish post-punk band accidentally became one of the most important rock acts of the 2020s. We cover the Mercury Prize nomination for their debut, the relentless touring schedule that led to burnout, the failed Los Angeles recording sessions with Nick Launay at Sunset Sound Studios, and how they scrapped an entire album before returning to producer Dan Carey's Streatham studio to record A Hero's Death.
The story continues with their move to London during the pandemic and how living in England as Irish immigrants shaped Skinty Fia—their first number one album in both the UK and Ireland. We examine the microaggressions they faced, the controversy around the song "In ár gCroíthe go deo," and how the album won them the Brit Award for International Group in 2023.
Then came the turning point: supporting Arctic Monkeys on a massive North American arena tour in 2023, playing venues like the Forum in Los Angeles, Red Rocks, and Forest Hills Stadium. This exposure led to working with producer James Ford and recording their fourth album Romance for XL Recordings.
Romance doubled their first-week sales, became their first album to chart on the Billboard 200 at number 97, earned two Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Performance, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The album became the fifth best-selling vinyl record of 2024 in the UK with over 42,000 copies sold.
This isn't an album-by-album review. It's the story of how Grian Chatten, Carlos O'Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan III, and Tom Coll built a career on their own terms without compromising, how they went from BIMM Dublin poetry students to Grammy nominees, and how mainstream success found them instead of the other way around.
