This is a Custom Model 2-8-4 Post - war VV909 Steam Locomotive I made. It's not perfect, but there's room for improvement.
Topics about these Innovative Machines:
The American 2-8-4 "mountain" steam locomotive is a Berkshire type, not a "mountain" type as the latter is typically a 4-8-2 wheel arrangement.
Introduced by Lima Locomotive Works in 1925, the 2-8-4 design was a significant "superpower" locomotive known for high horsepower and speed, with a large firebox supported by a four-wheel trailing truck. Different railroads gave it different names, such as "Berkshire" (by the Boston & Albany) and "Kanawha" (by the Chesapeake & Ohio).
Key features
Wheel arrangement: The 2-8-4 configuration means it has two leading wheels, eight powered driving wheels, and four trailing wheels.
"Superpower" design: The 2-8-4 was developed to improve on the 2-8-2 Mikado by increasing horsepower and fuel efficiency, often referred to as the "Horsepower at Speed" concept.
Large firebox: A four-wheel trailing truck was added to support a larger firebox, which allowed the engine to generate more steam and power for longer periods.
Speed and power: They were designed to maintain high speeds for long-haul freight and passenger service, with some models able to reach 70 mph comfortably.
Named after regions/rivers:
Berkshire: A name given by the Boston & Albany railroad after the Berkshire Hills in Massachusetts, where initial tests were conducted.
Kanawha: A name used by the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) railroad, after the Kanawha River in West Virginia.
Construction: The first prototypes were built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1925, and many were later built by other companies like the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and the Illinois Central.
