The letter O is so special because it is also the shape of a circle. This means there are so many opportunities for kids to see the letter O in everyday life and to make the connection between Os and circles. As one student adamantly explained though, not every circle is an O!

Having kids look for the shapes of letters in everyday life is a wonderful activity to spark their interdisciplinary thinking, which means learning is stronger because it connects more parts of the brain into a single memory.

I first was introduced with the idea of “looking for letters” by Shamini Dias who is a brilliant children’s educator. She has a fabulous collection of alphabet books! I hosted a webinar where she shared early literacy strategies and this was one of the major takeaways. So explore this game with your kids to “find” the shape of letters in nature and the surrounding environment. O is the perfect letter to start with!
