Top 10 All-Round Performances in World Cups
Even though cricket is a team sport, sometimes a player takes command of a match with both bat and ball.
The history of the World Cup is sprinkled with many such performances.
In this feature, we take a look at the top 10 all-round performances in Cricket World Cups.
1: Aravinda de Silva (3/42 & 107)
Aravinda de Silva displayed his fine all-rounder actions for Sri Lanka against Australia in 1996 final.
Australia looked set for a huge total at 137-1, but de Silva stormed Australia and picked up 3 for 42.
Chasing 242, Sri Lanka was in trouble at 23-2 when de Silva came and stroked a 107 to win by 7 wickets.
2: Andy Bichel (7/20 & 34*)
Andy Bichel displayed his all-rounder qualities for Australia against England in 2003 World Cup.
Coming into the attack with England at 60-0, Bichel picked up 3 wickets in 8 balls on his way to 7-20.
In pursuit of 205, Australia crashed to 135-8, when Bichel smashed 34 off 36 balls to get Australia home.
3: Duncan Fletcher (69* & 4/42)
Duncan Fletcher displayed his all-rounder traits for Zimbabwe against Australia in 1983 World Cup.
Collapsing at 94-5, Zimbabwe captain Fletcher led Zimbabwe to a total of 239-6 with his 69 not out.
Again Fletcher picked up 4 wickets to leave Australia at 133-4 and Australia fell 13 runs short.
4: Gary Gilmour (6/14 and 28*)
Gary Gilmour displayed his all-rounder qualities for Australia against England in 1975 World Cup.
After 12 overs of pinpoint accuracy, Gilmour finished with 6-14 to leave England in tatters at 93 all out.
Again he was soon in centre as Australia slumped to 39-6, but he scored 28 not out to give Australia win.
5: Neil Johnson (76 & 3/27)
Neil Johnson displayed his all-rounder traits for Zimbabwe against South Africa in 1999 World Cup.
Johnson resisted the attack of Pollock, Alan Donald, Kallis and Klusener to hit 76 at the top of the order.
With 234 to defend, South Africa crumbled to 185 all out, when Johnson picked up 3 wickets for 27 runs.
6: Ian Botham (4/31 & 53)
Ian Botham delivered his all-rounder performance for England against Australia in 1992 World Cup.
Australia was at 145-4 before Botham turned it and took 4 wickets for 31 to bundle Australia for 171.
Opening the batting, Botham erased any hope of Australian victory by scoring a steady 53 runs.
7: Michael Vaughan (3/39 & 79)
Michael Vaughan displayed his all-rounder qualities for England against West Indies in 2007 World Cup.
With a score of 350 plus looking likely, Vaughan came to stop the flow and took 3 wickets for 21 runs.
Chasing 301, Vaughan went on an all-out attack and scored 79 off 68 balls on its way to victory.
8: Lance Klusener (52* & 3/21)
Lance Klusener displayed his all-rounder persona for South Africa against Sri Lanka in 1999 World Cup.
Coming in at number 9 with 115 on the board, he delivered a match-winning knock of 52 off 45 balls.
With only 200 to defend, Klusener picked up 3 wickets for 21 runs to secure an 89 run victory.
9: Yuvraj Singh (113 & 2/18)
Yuvraj Singh displayed his all-rounder characteristics for India against West Indies in 2011 World Cup.
Despite losing regular wickets, Yuvraj Singh stood firm to bring up 113 runs and guided India to 268.
West Indies was at 154-2 when he came to bowl and picked up 2 wickets for 18 and a win for India.
10: Mohammad Azharuddin (54* & 3/19)
Mohammad Azharuddin displayed his all-rounder antics for India against Australia in 1987 World Cup.
Playing against Australia, Azharuddin came at 178-4 and drove India to 289, ending on 54 not out.
Australia was at 182-5, when Azharuddin came to bowl and picked up 3 wickets for 19 to ensure victory.
