NFF Participates in National Workshop on Small-Scale Fisheries in West Bengal
The National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) participated in a two-day national workshop on “Aligning India’s National Plan of Action for Small-Scale Fisheries with the Global SSF Process” held at Narendrapur, West Bengal. Organised by the Institute for Motivating Self Employment (IMSE) with the East Coast Fish Workers Union (ECFWU), the workshop brought together fishworkers’ organisations, trade unions, researchers, and civil society groups.
Addressing the gathering, NFF General Secretary Mr. Olencio Simoes stressed the urgent need to implement the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Small-Scale Fisheries (VGSSF), endorsed by India in 2014 but still unimplemented. He highlighted livelihood losses due to climate change, destructive fishing, and unplanned coastal development. NFF demanded inclusive, rights-based policy implementation and expressed readiness to cooperate with the government to protect fishers’ livelihoods and rights.
