In late Spring of 1967, Dmitri Shostakovich composed and dedicated his 2nd violin concerto to friend (and fellow musical giant) David Oistrakh for a 60th birthday gift to the violinist.
On September 13th, Oistrakh performed a live 'workshop' rendition of the piece - this performance was recorded and the tapes were sent to Shostakovich. Shortly thereafter, Oistrakh and Shostakovich had a phone discussion covering all of the musical and technical nuances that could improve the music, both for the official publication and the official world premiere performance on September 26th.
