The story of this place is rooted in the concept of Wanara. In the Hindu epic Ramayana, the Wanara are a race of monkey-like forest dwellers who helped Lord Rama. Because of this, the Balinese view the macaques as guardians of the temples.
The Legend of Protection
Local villagers believe that the monkeys protect the area from evil spirits. While the monkeys are known for being cheeky (and occasionally stealing sunglasses!), they are considered "The Army of the Temple." For centuries, the Padangtegal village has protected the forest because they believe that if the forest stays healthy and the monkeys are fed, the village will remain prosperous and spiritually balanced.
