For nearly 20 years, the United States and its allies were involved in a massive war in Afghanistan, making it the longest war in U.S. history. Trillions of dollars were spent on military operations, rebuilding efforts, and training Afghan security forces. Over the course of the war, thousands of U.S. and coalition soldiers lost their lives, while tens of thousands of Afghan civilians, government troops, and Taliban fighters were killed. Despite the enormous military presence, financial investment, and human sacrifice on all sides, the Taliban returned to power in 2021 shortly after U.S. and NATO forces withdrew. This outcome shows how complex modern wars can be—where winning battles does not always mean winning the future of a country.
