@Seeing is Believing. A brief walk video of Car street & Bhavanthi Street of Mangalore city, covering old and famous theatres viz, New Chithra, Srinivasa ( Balaji theatre), Ramakanthi & Rupavani. Out of these, New Chithra,90 yr old was closed in 2017 & have started furniture shops by name Sudha Furniture/ New Chithra Furniture. This was only English Cinema Theatre then. The advent of digital film technology and multiplexes have put tremendous pressure to the owners for huge investment to upgrade the system..
The Balaji theatre ( now Srinivas) hasn’t closed officially. But after the Govt’s compulsory lockdown of theatres during Covid, they have not opened it again!
Ramakanthi is now in running condition!
Seems lack of maintenance! And Rupavani has survived most of the problems! It has recently upgraded itself and a decent seating & good sound system and traditional single screen ambience has made it among the best old theatres of Mangalore. The complete digital & mobile technology and the multi screens and the resulting cost of upgradation & film distribution have put the theatre owners in a fix.!
