Following Japan's defeat, the Communists gained a significant advantage by securing Japanese weapons in Manchuria with Soviet assistance, while the Nationalists' reliance on waning American support and their inability to stabilize the economy led to mass defections. Ultimately, Mao ignored Stalin's advice to leave China divided and successfully pushed his forces south, forcing the Nationalists to flee to Taiwan and unifying mainland China under the People's Republic in 1949.
