Rabat, Morocco's capital, rests along the shoresof the Bouregreg River and the Atlantic Ocean. This Berber-era royal fort is surroundedby formal French-designed gardens and overlooksthe ocean. The city's iconic Hassan Tower, a12th-century minaret, soars above the ruins of amosque.

Salé is a city in northwestern Morocco, on the rightbank of the Bou Regreg river, opposite the nationalcapital Rabat, for which it serves as a commutertown. Founded in about 1030 by the Banu Ifran,it later became a haven for pirates in the 17thcentury as an independent republic before beingincorporated into Alaouite Morocco.
