Art-net is DMX over Ethernet. And a bit more. It solved few very annoying limitations of DMX and added a ton of options. It's compatibility is deal breaker whenever you are working on large projects. Although in our opinion it is a bit more complicated compared to using SPI, e.g. during Output mapping. See for yourself what is our approach :)
