Chery has unveiled its KP 31 concept, showcasing the world's first dual-cab ute with a plug- in hybrid diesel powertrain. This new model, still unnamed but internally called' KP 31, ' offers a preview of the production version expected in Q 4 2026
. The vehicle features a 2. 5 L turbodiesel engine, with details on
power, torque, battery capacity, range, and charging speed still to be confirmed.
Built on a versatile Kaitan ladder- frame chassis,
it boasts a braked towing capacity
Of 3, 500 kg, a payload of 1, 000 kg, and measures
5, 610 mm in length. It also includes
three different locking options and
6- stud wheels.
The KP 31 will be the first ute globally with a plug- in hybrid diesel system, combining a turbocharged engine with electric assistance, claimed to achieve 47% thermal efficiency and 10% better fuel economy than typical diesels. Payload is rated at 1, 000 kg, with a towing capacity of 3. 3.5 tonnes. Chery states vibration levels will be reduced by 30% compared to standard diesels.
They also claim the powertrain will be 10% more efficient and generate 30% less vibration than an average diesel engine, though exact consumption figures, battery size, and system power are still unavailable.
The brand's Rely P 3 X, which shares the same platform and features the same 2. 5 L turbo diesel PHEV, outputs 210 kW and 650 Nm, with an electric range of 170 km (on NEDC). These specs are likely to transfer to the Australian model.
Pricing is yet to be finalized but is expected to be close to the popular BYD Shark 6 ute's $ 57, 900 drive- away price, with a Chery Australia spokesperson suggesting it will be in a similar price range.
The vehicle is confirmed to have a 1, 000 kg payload and 3, 500 kg towing capacity, with possible inclusion of front, center, and rear differential locks.
Initially, the KP 31 will be offered only as a dual- cab, but the rear tub is removable, and a cab chassis variant may be developed.
Development focused on an ‘Australia- first’ approach, with Chinese engineers benchmarking local rivals for ride, handling, and durability. Further tuning of the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is planned.
A petrol PHEV version is also expected within 2027, though timing remains uncertain.
