An imam has been arraigned in court for allegedly defrauding a Muslim faithful of more than seven hundred thousand shillings in a botched pilgrimage deal.
Ustadh Omar Athman is accused of obtaining 774,000 shillings from Mohamed Salim Bahlewa by falsely claiming he would facilitate his participation in the Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, Omar denied the charges. The court is set to rule on his bail application on February 10. He was arrested on Sunday at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport upon his arrival in the country.
Meanwhile, several Muslims from across the country have come forward with similar complaints, alleging they were defrauded by Omar in a scheme linked to the organization of Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages to Mecca.
