It was the curiosity felt during masonry work that finally turned Alappuzha Karuvatta Akshay Bhavan resident T K Ajayan into a busy sculptor. Beginning with a concrete rocket in the backyard of an ISRO officer’s house in Thiruvananthapuram, the list of his sculptures includes turtle, crocodile, cup and saucer and Lord Buddha built in various houses in the Alappuzha district.
Over the years, Ajay's livelihood has been welding, plumbing and construction work. The art work on the well at a friend’s house was done out of curiosity during a masonry work there. The very first attempt got a good response. With this, he started asking for permission to make sculptures in the houses where he went for masonry or plumbing work.
So models of crocodile and a turtle appeared next to an artificial blue water Lilly pond at a house in Karuvatta. The construction was done using only broken bricks and cement left over during construction.
When the lilly pond was built in the Karuvattakulangara Sri Krishna temple compound, the idea of a concrete tree nearby came to mind. A picture of a peacock resting on a tree appeared in Ajayan's mind when he was halfway through the construction of the tree. Ajayan completed the peacock sculpture during the covid lockdown, escaping the eyes of policemen. Soon, more people started coming in search of Ajay to avail themselves of his service in building sculptures.
Ajayan, who has no training in sculpting, creates a model after visualising it. Even photos or pictures are not used as references.
Ajayan is now busy making a mountain and a waterfall in the courtyard of a house in Haripad which is currently under construction.

As Ajayan keeps adding aesthetics to others’ houses, Ajayan's dream of renovating his own wooden house remains unfulfilled. His dream is to have a small house full of sculptures.
