A look at my 1956 Heidelberg Windmill platen press, still doing useful work after more than half a century.
These machines were the pinnacle of "letterpress" printing able to hit ~5000 impressions an hour before being superseded by cylinder presses and offset lithography. They are still much sought after as form cutting machines, as this one is doing, and also find niches in hot-foiling, embossing, crash-numbering and long run single colour jobs such as NCR forms.
The machine has dozens of controls and adjustments and needs to be "driven" by the operator (at least until he's convinced it's running smoothly) There is a central oiling system for the main bearings but frequent manual oiling and greasing is also required if it's to stand any chance of seeing out it's full century.
