Dal Lake, the crown jewel of Kashmir… is now making waves in Indian sports history. For the first time ever, the Khelo India Water Sports Festival is happening right here in Srinagar. Over 500 athletes from 36 States/UTs are competing in rowing, canoeing and kayaking. The Water Sports Festival will also feature demonstration events like water skiing, dragon boat and Shikara race.
Now, why is this significant? Because, water sports have 16 medals in the Olympics and remain the key to bettering India’s ranks at the international platform. For example, At the Paris 2024 Olympics, India ranked 71st. But if we had won just one gold in water sports, our rank would have jumped to 52nd. With Dal Lake offering conditions like Europe’s waters, this festival could unlock talent from J&K and across India — and boost India’s global sporting performance.
