While visiting Carnegie Hall on tour earlier this week, CSO principal clarinet Stephen Williamson had the opportunity to visit the Susan W. Rose Archives and play a very special instrument: a clarinet owned by the “King of Swing,” Benny Goodman. Goodman made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1938, leading one of the first racially integrated groups to perform for a paying audience and marking the first time that swing music was presented in a seated concert hall.
Enjoy this video of Williamson performing an excerpt from Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto — originally composed for Goodman — on the historic instrument.
