Iraqi forces seize oil city Kirkuk from Kurds in bold advance

Iraqi government forces have seized control of the disputed city of Kirkuk from Kurdish fighters after a military operation lasting less than 24 hours.

Aram… this all comes after the Kurds held a controversial independence referendum a few weeks ago and Baghdad has responded with force.

That's right Semin… armored vehicles from Iraq's counter-terrorism unit moved into the center of Kirkuk on Monday and the Iraqi flag was raised over the local government headquarters.
Thousands of civilians have fled the scene and it is not yet known how many casualties there were.
The Iraqi military has said it has taken control of an oil field, which is a key source of revenue for the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government.
The Kurdish fighters, known as Peshmerga, said Baghdad would be made to pay "a heavy price" for triggering war on the Kurdistan people.
Iraq's prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, said in a statement on Monday that the operation in Kirkuk was necessary to protect the unity of the country.
He had previously labeled the referendum, in which Kurds voted overwhelmingly for independence, as unconstitutional.
But, the dispute is also a concern for the United States, as its military has previously backed both the government and the Kurds in the fight against Islamic State militants.
President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that Washington would not take sides in the matter, but did not like the fact that they are clashing.
The U.S. has repeatedly called for both sides to settle their differences with talks, as all-out conflict could potentially draw in regional powers such as Turkey and Iran.
