A PPF or Public Provident Fund is a tax-free savings scheme offered by the Government of India, wherein interest on the account is set for every quarter and is paid by the government.
Public Provident Fund (PPF) scheme is a popular long term investment option backed by Government of India which offers safety with attractive interest rate and returns that are fully exempted from Tax. Investors can get the facilities such as loan, withdrawal and extension of account.
PPF is a 15-year scheme, which can be extended indefinitely in block of 5 years. It can be opened in a designated post office or a bank branch. It can also be opened online with few banks. One is allowed to transfer a PPF account from a post office to a bank or vice versa.

The PPF account present interest rate is opened at a post office is 7.1% p.a. and it is compounded on a yearly basis. The interest that is generated from the contributions made towards PPF is also tax exempt.
Persons having a PPF account in the bank cannot open another account in the post office and vice-versa. If two accounts are opened by the subscriber in his name by mistake, the second account will be treated as irregular account and will not carry any interest unless the two accounts are amalgamated.
Government-backed schemes like post office saving schemes and bank fixed deposits are safe and they also offer assured returns. However, the trouble with them is that they offer only modest returns. Often the post-tax returns fail to beat inflation. When that happens over a long period, your money loses its value.
There is no age requirement for opening a PPF account. Adults, as well as minors, can have a PPF account. However, in the case of minors who are below 18 years, the account should be operated by a guardian on his/her behalf until he/she turns 18. People who wish to open a PPF account have no age requirements.
There is a lock-in period of 15 years and the money can be withdrawn in full after its maturity period. However, pre-mature withdrawals can be made from the start of the seventh financial year.
