Join me for an inspiring late summer evening paddle in Pittock Lake (ahem...reservoir) as we venture out to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Bald Eagle! In this video, I encounter an eagle perched high in a tree overlooking the north shore of Pittock Lake.
Bald Eagles are native to southern Ontario and were once threatened and endangered. They have made a big comeback in recent decades, especially around the Long Point region on the north shore of Lake Erie. They are still rare to see in parts of this area, so when you do get to encounter one close to home, it truly is an amazing sight.
After searching a birdwatcher's website about the Cormorants around this lake, I found photos and locations of Bald Eagle sightings in the same area. So I ventured out to see if I could find this eagle (or eagles). After an hour or so of paddling the east end of the lake, past the county road, I didn't find any eagles. Disheartened, I paddled westward back towards the main part of the lake to the area where I did see an eagle the previous fall. What are the chances an eagle would be in that same area? Well, after combing the tree tops as I paddled, I came around a corner and there he (or she) was. What an amazing sight!
Seeing an eagle in a zoo is one thing, but encountering one in the wild is breathtaking. We had witnessed eagles in trees and in flight in Big Creek canoe trip a few years back. You can see them in this video... • We Took On Big Creek and Lived to Tell Abo... .
