When Larry McReynolds joined Richard Childress Racing as Dale Earnhardt's crew chief at the beginning of the 1997 Winston Cup season, expectations were high.
When the season mercifully ended, Earnhardt had gone winless for the first time in 18 years.
The weight of the world was on McReynolds' shoulders. Some of the pressure was self induced, but even more came from the legions of Earnhardt supporters. Was McReynolds a Ford spy ... a saboteur?
Things got so particularly ugly, McReynolds dared not wear an RCR crew shirt outside the race track. He considered hiring a full-time body guard.
And then ... then Earnhardt and McReynolds won the 1998 Daytona 500.
