I almost didn’t make this scouting trip… and that would’ve been a mistake.
Before bringing the kids out here for a full 24-hour challenge, I needed to do a quick scout trip to make sure this spot was actually safe and worth it. On this trip I walk the spillway, check water levels, terrain, and access — and I’m honestly glad I came, because I found some valuable information that might completely change how (and if) we camp here.
This wasn’t just a walk-through either. I cooked breakfast out here to see how the spot feels first thing in the morning, then came back later and cooked dinner to get a real sense of what a full day would be like if we decide to stay overnight. These scout trips matter more than people realize.
Sometimes scouting confirms your plan… and sometimes it makes you rethink everything.
