In this session I start with a piano from the Korg Kronos and record it straight into a Sony VOR cassette recorder to capture real tape compression, hiss, saturation, and natural mechanical character.
Instead of using a plugin, I wanted real analog texture.
I then play the tape back into the Moog Matriarch, shape the tone, and run it into the Akai MPC Live where I build the drums and structure the track. After that, I record a bassline and synth layer from the ASM Hydrasynth to complete the beat.
This is a simple track — but it’s a strong example of how creative routing and real tape can add depth to your MPC productions.
Yes, plugins like Flavor Pro are powerful (and I use them), but nothing replaces the unpredictable character of real cassette machines — the slight pitch shifts, compression, and noise floor that give a beat life.
If you're into hardware workflows, tape saturation, or hybrid analog/digital production, this one’s for you.
