After a distinctly mediocre season in which he was plagued by media scandal and ill health, many expected fourth seed Tony Knowles to be a first round casualty at the 1986 Embassy World Championship when he drew one of the most dangerous qualifiers in Neal Foulds. The prophecies looked accurate as Foulds forged into an 8-6 lead, before Knowles forced the match to a deciding frame.
