The programs that organized these migrations — including the Orphan Train Movement and the British Home Children initiative — moved children by the hundreds of thousands between 1854 and the early 20th century. Record-keeping was inconsistent, fragmented, and in some cases later restricted.

Then, in 1921, nearly the entire 1890 United States Census was destroyed in a fire at the Commerce Department Building — eliminating what would have been the most critical nationwide snapshot of these children during their adult lives.

Today, millions of Americans and Canadians trace their genealogical dead ends to this period.
