Project: Student Contribution to Science through Schoolyard Bird Surveys and the Christmas Bird Count
Education Coordinator Kathy Rigling, a retired science teacher and birder, engages students in hands-on science through schoolyard bird surveys and participation in the Christmas Bird Count (CBC). Working with Title I schools through the FLEDJE and IDEAL programs, she helps teachers integrate bird-related STEM lessons, guides students in creating bird habitats, and provides classroom sets of binoculars made possible through National Audubon grants.
In 2024–25, Kathy led schoolyard CBCs at Zellwood Elementary and Wolf Lake Middle, involving over 500 students. Each grade participated in short outdoor counts after viewing a video about the CBC’s history and purpose. Older students assisted younger ones, gaining confidence and leadership skills while learning scientific observation methods.
Through these experiences, students from diverse backgrounds discovered that they can contribute to real science and conservation. Habitat projects at both schools further strengthened their connection to birds and the natural world.
