In this presentation, I examine how the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) influence asthma outcomes, focusing specifically on reducing emergency room visits. Using the Kaiser Family Foundation SDOH framework, I explore six key determinants—economic stability, education, healthcare access, neighborhood environment, social context, and food environment—and how each contributes to asthma management.
This presentation also highlights recent peer-reviewed research by Grant et al. (2022), Koumpagioti et al. (2025), and Geiger et al. (2025), which demonstrate the strong connection between SDOH, asthma severity, and emergency care utilization.
By understanding and addressing these determinants, healthcare providers can support improved asthma control and reduce preventable ER visits.
