That's nearly double Bloomberg's last budget of $70 billion, growing faster than inflation, faster than the city's economy, and faster than the population — which is actually shrinking.
We break down every receipt. NYC's DOE budget jumped from $34 billion to over $40 billion while enrollment dropped. Per pupil spending hits nearly $35,000 in 2026 — more than most college tuitions — and outcomes are middling at best. Rental assistance exploded from $263 million to $1.3 billion in a few years and rents still went up. Combined corporate tax rate is 17.44%, highest in the country, and Mamdani wants to raise it further or hike property taxes by 10%.
This isn't just a New York problem. Brandon Johnson in Chicago is running the same play with a city hemorrhaging residents. Karen Bass in LA spent nearly a billion dollars on homelessness — homelessness went up 80% since 2015. An audit of $2.4 billion in LA homelessness funding found officials couldn't track where the money went.
Blue cities are promising more, spending more, and delivering less. When CNN starts saying it out loud, the receipts have spoken.
