Per delivery rates have dropped from ₹17 to ₹12. Distance orders that paid ₹70-80 now pay ₹60. He used to start at 6 AM and return home at midnight. To earn ₹2000-3000 in a day, you need 50 to 60 deliveries. Companies promise ₹60,000 a month. It doesn't happen.
The 10 minute delivery pressure is real. Customers call repeatedly asking why you're late. Traffic doesn't matter to them. Other riders manage, they say. So riders break red lights. They take dangerous turns at speed. Himanshu admitted he's done it too. His accidents? He's lost count. Once his bike slipped in a basement. His hand got injured. There have been many such incidents.
Some housing societies don't allow delivery workers to use the main lift. Service lift only. If that's broken? Climb 10, 12, 14 floors with the order. No respect, Himanshu said. They see us as something less.
Night shifts bring robbery risks. Orders get snatched. Riders get attacked. The company does nothing.
There's no PF, no ESI, no retirement benefits, no paid sick leave. The packers inside the warehouse get all of this. The riders who face the sun, rain, fog, pollution, traffic? Nothing. This isn't employment, Himanshu said. It's just: deliver this many orders, get this much money.
He stopped taking breaks. Stopped eating lunch. Worked non-stop to chase incentives. His health collapsed. He was bedridden for two to three weeks.
I asked him what needs to change. His answer: Night safety for riders. Fair pay. And end the 10 minute delivery system. A rider earning for his family shouldn't have to risk never returning to them.
These companies are worth thousands of crores. Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto. The Indian economy celebrates them. But the riders who power this economy deserve dignity, fair wages, and basic protections.
I raised these issues in Parliament. I will keep raising them until things change.
