Описание: Forensic Medicine in India has a history deeply rooted in its ancient texts and traditions. Long before the term "forensic" was formally introduced, early Indian civilizations like the Vedic society had already begun laying the groundwork for medico-legal thought. The Rigveda and Atharvaveda contain references to diseases, injuries, and even poisonings, while the Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita—two of India’s most revered medical treatises—described dissection, wound classification, and the management of unnatural deaths. Sushruta’s work in particular, dating back to 600 BCE, demonstrated a remarkable understanding of anatomy and trauma, forming the earliest known Indian foundations of forensic and surgical knowledge.

However, the continuity of this indigenous knowledge was periodically disrupted by waves of invasions and political upheavals. During the medieval period, especially under Mughal rule, there was a shift toward Islamic medical practices like Unani, and formal dissection was largely discouraged. This cultural and religious shift slowed down the evolution of hands-on forensic practices, though medico-legal opinions were still sought in cases involving poisoning, inheritance disputes, and injury-related crime.

The arrival of the British marked a pivotal transformation in the development of forensic medicine in India. The British East India Company and later the Crown introduced Western scientific methodologies into Indian legal and medical institutions. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) were drafted, and autopsies became an integral part of criminal investigations. Forensic medicine began to be taught formally in Indian medical colleges, with landmark institutions like Calcutta Medical College and Madras Medical College taking the lead in the 19th century. Indian doctors trained under British systems became instrumental in creating a hybrid medico-legal framework that blended Indian realities with Western science.

Post-independence, the field continued to evolve in response to India's complex legal and social environment. The rise in crime rates, the need for scientific investigation, and judicial scrutiny led to the development of specialized forensic science laboratories across the country. The role of forensic experts in courtrooms became more structured, and training programs for doctors and law enforcement officials were expanded. Indian medical universities also began to standardize forensic curricula under the guidance of regulatory bodies.

The 21st century ushered in a technological revolution in forensic medicine. From traditional autopsies using scalpels and bone saws, India has gradually moved toward advanced diagnostic tools such as CT and MRI-based virtual autopsy. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and other leading centers have begun incorporating virtual dissection techniques that preserve the dignity of the deceased while improving accuracy and documentation. These modern methods symbolize not just scientific progress, but a return to ethical principles that have always been part of India's medical tradition.

This video traces that long, rich, and complex journey—from the hymns of the Vedas and the surgical precision of Sushruta, through colonial impositions and postcolonial developments, to the digital transformation we see today. Forensic medicine in India is not merely a subject of science; it is a story of resilience, adaptation, and revival, shaped by centuries of knowledge, conflict, and innovation.
