What hawks teach us about God

If you’ve been with us for the past several weeks, you’ve heard me quote from the
book of Job, which is where, other than Genesis 1, the Bible gives the most extensive insight
into God’s creative activity. The reason for doing so was because Job was questioning the
goodness and the fairness of God and God’s plan for his life. So God asks Job a series of
rhetorical questions to remind him that we cannot comprehend the mysteries and the
majesty of our God. So the Lord asks questions like “Where were you when I set the
foundations of the earth in place?” The answer of course was, nowhere. I didn’t exist yet.
And “Can you arrange the constellations in the sky?” The answer of course is “I can’t.”
“Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south?
And again, the answer to these rhetorical questions is, “No. Birds don’t listen to me.
But they do listen to you.” After it goes on like this for a couple chapters, we hear Job’s
response.
Then Job replied to the Lord: 2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours
can be thwarted. 3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without
knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for
me to know… I repent in dust and ashes. (Job 42:1-3,6)
So the lesson for us is that sometimes things are going to happen that we don’t
understand. They seem like they make no sense. They may even seem unfair or
unreasonable. And for that reason, we might turn that around as anger toward God and
wanting an apology or at least an explanation.
We don’t always know God’s purpose. We can’t always know God’s purpose. So we,
like Job, need to admit that when we doubt him, we are speaking of things we don’t
understand, too wonderful for us to know. And that we should trust God. If he has the
wisdom to tell birds to fly south so they will be safe from the winter, then he certainly has
the wisdom to direct our steps in the way we should go.
