ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
When I am handed three kestrel chicks from three separate locations across Yorkshire they are ready to be released to the wild.
Kestrel rescues
All three were found by members of the public and had been cared for by Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre, Battle Flatts Veterinary clinic and Ryedale Rehabilitation.
Watching them go
My network of cameras allow me to monitor their progress. The kestrels are ready to fledge and within 20 minutes, the first chick is at the nest entrance.
Flying free
The second soon follows, and, although the third chick seems a little more nervous, it isn't long before it joins the others.
Two new rescues
The very next day I receive two more kestrel chicks. These chicks are also unrelated. I put them into my Sycamore Stump nest box and both kestrels also waste no time in going to the nest entrance.
Five kestrels
Five is an average clutch size for kestrels, so I hope these rescued birds will join up together.
Lending a hand
I leave food out for the youngsters to encourage them to use Sycamore Stump as their base. But with five beaks to feed, there are some arguments
Dispersal
In the wild, kestrels stay around their nest for a few weeks being fed by their parents, so I continue to leave food for them whilst they get used to hunting for themselves
