The Spokane, Portland & Seattle locomotive No. 700, is the only surviving example of the E-I, 4-8-4 “Northern” type steam locomotive. This distinction earned the locomotive placement on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1938 it was retired in 1956 & sat outdoors on public display for 20 years before being restored in 1990. It is currently owned by the City of Portland and operated by the Oregon Rail Heritage Center. It is brought out periodically for special occasions. In 2007 I had the opportunity to ride in the cab for a short excursion at Oaks Park. This is the video of that adventure.
