Chilean riot police have clashed with protesters outside the Peruvian Embassy in downtown Santiago.

The demonstrators were protesting against the killing of 14 Tupac Amaru rebels during Tuesday's raid to free 72 hostages at the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Lima.

Several police were injured in Friday's clashes.

It all started with a demo by some 200 people outside the Peruvian Embassy in Santiago.

The protesters waved banners in support of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement and the Chilean leftist guerrilla group Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front.

They were protesting the killing of 14 Marxist rebels during Tuesday's commando raid to free 72 hostages at the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Lima.

Police with riot shields pushed demonstrators to the ground outside the embassy.

They also fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Protesters retaliated with a hail of stones injuring several officers.

Unnamed Peruvian security sources have said some of the 14 rebels were executed as they tried to surrender.

President Alberto Fujimori has denied the claims.

All 14 Tupac Amaru rebels, one hostage and two commandos died during Tuesday's operation to free the hostages who had been in captivity since December 17.
