An audio-visual installation created for BBC Stargazing Live at the University of Derby, January 2013.
In this piece, the same mathematical principles that can be used to model the earth's gravitational field, atomic orbital electron configurations and the magnetic fields of planetary bodies are utilised in order to realise compositions in space, frequency and time. This system is called Higher Order Ambisonics and is a systemic approach to 3 dimensional sound fields that is intrinsically "speaker layout agnostic" allowing the composer to render the piece to any speaker array without having to remix the audio to take the new layout into account. The software used to achieve this has been researched and written by staff and students at the University of Derby.
Celestial Dynamics is an example of the exploration of musical temporal and spatial structure drawn from narrative elements from within an abstract animation. Motion within the animation is interpreted and used to determine synchronised sonic events spatialised using ambisonic plugins created by Dr Bruce Wiggins and deployed within the software Reaper .
The presented animation was developed from constrained source material, in this case a filtered image derived from a NASA Hubble photograph of Uranus from January 2006: http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/multimedi... and the radiowave emissions relayed by Voyager 2 from January 1986: http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/f...
The piece is envisioned in the horizontal plane with the listener centrally positioned from which the sound emanates and tracks the path of the tendrils temporally and spatially. This composition is part of the on-going prISM (perceptual research in Image, Sound and Music) research by Michael Brown and Chris Wilson from the CTRG (Creative Technologies Research Group) at the University of Derby.

This is a matrixed stereo (UHJ) version of the original 3D audio as you tube doesn't support surround sound yet! Link to a 5.1 version coming soon....
