India’s sugar market is facing a growing supply crunch, with prices rising sharply and the government allowing 10 lakh tonnes of duty-free sugar imports for the first time in nearly a decade. But why does a country that is among the world’s largest sugar producers need to import sugar? In this video, we break down what is driving the crisis, from lower sugar production and falling opening stocks to rising festive demand, crop damage and possible hoarding.
We also look at how ethanol production and the E20 programme have changed the way India uses its sugarcane and whether diverting sugarcane towards fuel could put further pressure on the food supply. Finally, we examine the government’s response through duty-free imports, stock limits and export restrictions and ask whether these measures can bring sugar prices under control without hurting sugar mills and farmers.
