Abigail - Trisomy 9 Awareness

As a photographer and doula, I am most often called to witness, support, and document birth. But every now and then, I am asked to be there when the coin turns. And honestly—both roles are equally challenging and rewarding, just in different ways.
This is Abigail’s story. Her life was short, but her impact was immense.
During pregnancy, a routine anatomy scan led to further genetic testing, which revealed that Abigail had Trisomy 9 Mosaic—a rare condition where some cells contain an extra copy of chromosome 9. This can cause a wide range of physical and intellectual challenges, and most babies with this diagnosis do not survive past their first year.
With her family’s permission, I am sharing Abigail’s story to raise awareness of this incredibly rare and complicated condition.
Many families who receive this diagnosis face heartbreaking decisions due to the significant health risks to both the baby and the mother, as well as the poor prognosis for the baby.
“Abigail’s family has chosen to donate some of her tissue, which will be used either to help other babies, or if unable to, will be donated to scientific research in hopes of advancing our understanding of this condition”

"She passed for a reason, and if that reason is science and awareness of an incredibly rare disease, then so be it," Abigail’s mother told me.
Though her journey on Earth was brief, her legacy will live on.
