What Are LEAPS?

LEAPS are simply long-term options—contracts that expire more than a year out, often up to roughly 2.5 years. Because of that extra time, they behave differently from short-term options: flatter implied volatilities, slower delta changes, small theta, big vega and meaningful sensitivity to interest rates.
I tend to use LEAPS mainly in diagonal spreads or as a stock substitute. Buying an in-the-money LEAP gives long-term exposure at a much lower cost than shares, and selling short-term calls against it lets you take advantage of the faster theta decay in near-dated options. Rolling those short calls can help offset the LEAP’s cost while keeping long-term exposure in place.
