In this breakdown, I explain the structure behind defensive decisions using the Boxing Notebook framework.
You’ll learn:
• The 4 core states — Square High, Square Low, Bladed High, Bladed Low
• How actions transition you from state to state
• How beats control timing
• Why the same jab–rear straight can produce different defensive answers
We walk through multiple scenarios against a jab → rear straight:
From Square High:
• Drop 45 → Weave In
• Bob → Weave Out
From Bladed High:
• In 45 → Weave Out
• In → Bob
Then we go further.
After the jab–rear straight, your opponent ends in Square High.
Now your finishing state determines your counters:
From Square Low:
• Hook to the body
• Uppercut
• Lead hook to the head
From Bladed Low:
• Rear uppercut
• Rear overhand
Notice what’s happening.
Your state limits your options.
And when options shrink, decisions speed up.
You’re not guessing.
You’re selecting from what’s structurally available.
State → Action → Beat.
That’s how you build repeatable boxing patterns.
