Today’s guest is a man whose life tracks directly with the history of New York City law enforcement and service to this country — retired NYPD Detective Ralph Nieves. Ralph was born on March 13, 1944, in Spanish Harlem and, from an early age, grew up in the Bronx, coming up through New York City public schools before going on to study criminal justice at John Jay College in Manhattan. In 1963, he completed United States Marine Corps training at Parris Island and served honorably as a wire communications Marine with the 6th Communications Battalion attached to the 2nd Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. By 1966, after going through NYPD pre-appointment interviews in the mid‑1960s, Ralph was officially appointed to the New York City Police Department, serving first in uniform assignments including the 48th Precinct, Queens nighttime task forces, and then moving into Bronx Narcotics. In the early 1970s, he was assigned to the New York Federal Drug Enforcement Task Force and worked through the creation of the Office of Drug Abuse Law Enforcement under President Nixon, continuing from 1970 to 1977 in the 41st Precinct investigative unit and the Bronx Sex Crimes Unit during some of the city’s most difficult crime years. After retiring from the NYPD, Ralph began a second career as a bilingual polygraph examiner and New York State–licensed private investigator with Falcon Private Investigators, spending more than 30 years as a member of the American Polygraph Association, teaching seminars across major U.S. cities and conducting polygraph work throughout South America. Today, at 82, that timeline — Marine, NYPD detective, federal task force veteran, and forensic polygraph expert — comes together in one voice, and it is an honor to welcome retired Detective Ralph Nieves to The Equalizer Podcast
